MAKING A RECORDER: THE WINDWAY CUTTER

This machine cuts the recorder's windway with great precision. The head joint is fixed in the wooden support. The cutting tool is on end of the rod on the left. The carriage is guided by two steel bars and operated by the handle in the foreground.

The old makers may have used tools like these to cut the windway (from Diderot & Dalembert's Encyclopédie).
