The Coronation of the Virgin of Cologne

by the master of the Lyversberg Passion

This painting on wood dates from about 1460. It is now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. It represents the Virgin Mary being crowned by Jesus Christ, surrounded by angel musicians whose instruments are shown with great detail.

There are three recorders in the group on the left of the picture.

Detail of the recorders

These instruments would probably have cylindrical bores, giving a strong, clear sound over a range of one octave and a sixth, possibly a little more.
